The Verbal Nouns of The Medially Weak Augmented Patterns: 2af3ala And (2i)staf3ala

ar
Authors: Jafar Nayef Ababneh
Keywords: Arabic Morphology, Verbal Nouns of 2af3ala and (2i)staf3ala
Publication year: 2015
Pages: 1 - 12

Abstract

The verbal nouns: 2if3āl and (2i)stif3āl of the respective augmented hollow verb patterns: 2af3ala and (2i)staf3ala deviate from their counterparts of medially consonantal or semi-consonantal radicals. The ancient scholars’ renowned explanation of this deviation is that the long characteristic vowel /ā/ of these verbal nouns is silent, but preceded by a short /a/ that can be moved backward, thus transforming the medial /w/ and /y/ in the underlying structure to another /ā/ and eventually bringing two long vowels in juxtaposition, a condition that can’t be tolerated and must be avoided by deleting one of the two /ā/s, and adding the affix -a(t) in compensation. Some modern scholars suggest that the ending -a(t) is a substitute for the extra vowel length expected after deleting the weak radicals. The present paper suggests that the ending -a(t) is derivational and a direct compensation for the deletion of the weak radicals themselves, without going through ill-motivated and devious steps.

Authors: Muna Al-Ajrami , Hala Baides
Keywords: Error Analysis; Contrastive Analysis; Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language
Publication year: 2015
Pages: 13 - 34

Abstract

Arabic language is considered as a derivative, morphological language, which distinguishes it from other languages. Hence, any new learner of the language is expected to commit linguistic mistakes as a result of misunderstanding the language in its different levels (i.e phonological, morphological, syntactic, and lexical level). Therefore, this research aims to analyze errors committed by learners of Arabic in the fourth level at the Language Center in University of Jordan according to the practical approaches: Contrastive Analysis Approach, and Error Analysis Approach, in which practical linguists deal with the problems of teaching Arabic as foreign language. The sample of the study consisted of writing of Korean students, both male and female, in the fourth level at the language Center in the academic year 2013/2014. This level was chosen due to the fact that the students of the fourth level are expected to have the skill of writing, the ability to express themselves through writing and speaking, and a sufficient amount of vocabulary. This fact relayed on different sources in addition to the researchers’ experience in this field. As a result of this study, many errors were found in different linguistic levels. It was also found that one error leads to other errors, such as: phonological, morphological, structural, and lexical errors.

Publication year: 2015
Pages: 128 - 140

Abstract

The learner begins to learn the target language while he/she has a complete linguistic system for his/ her native language. The native language system usually is the only linguistic system that he/she has, and his/ her general frame that accommodates the new linguistic system; therefore, the mother tongue interferes significantly on some levels: the sound, vocabularies, structures, and significance. To study the influence of the mother tongue in every level of language does not mean to separate them; because we realize that the language is a complete system which consists of partial systems: vocal, morphological, syntactic and semantic, moreover, every defect in any of them is followed by a defect in the rest of the systems. Considering the previous aspects while learning the target language carries a picture of the process of learning the language which is sometimes blended or controlled by what might be called an (illusion) its source basically is the system of the mother tongue. In addition, the realization of the mother tongue impact in learning the target language comes from understanding the issue of the learner’s connect between the two languages.

Publication year: 2015
Pages: 205 - 220

Abstract

This research aims to explore the role of the poetic image in the structure of the tale in Badr Shakir al-Sayyāb’s poem “Ḥaffār al-qubūr” (The Grave Digger). It highlights structural features of the poetic image and analyses how images appear and develop in the poem. Poetic images in “Ḥaffār al-qubūr” grow in tandem, whereby single images form a scene delineating place and time. The research also aims to heighten the overlap between the image and tale components in “Ḥaffār al-qubūr”, as the tale in the poem is formed by poetic images. The research focuses in particular on time and character, due to their complex and ambiguous nature in the poem. The research provides an analytical study which directly examines poetic images and the tale in “Ḥaffār al-qubūr” and the manner by which they produce the poem’s vision and meaning. The poem does not offer abstract meanings; they are instead embodied by the poetic images and by the tale, of which they are deemed to be part.

Abstract

“Nights Underground” is a short story, written by a contemporary Irish poet and author, Mary Dorcey, in 1989. This story reveals how feminism and post-colonialism amalgamate in the English society during the time of the Cold War. The two main characters are Irish lesbian females who endure double colonization by the British and the patriarchy enveloping their lives with racism, prejudice, degradation, and othering. This study offers a post-colonial and a feminist reading of “Nights Underground,” linking the two critical schools and offering a dual reading of the text. Dorcey sheds light on the dangerous and destructive effects of marginalization, alienation and discrimination that could lead to disruption of social order if intensely and continuously imposed upon a group of people. We aim at clarifying the correlation between Irish diaspora and lesbian/patriarchal predicament through highlighting how such theories as Post-Colonialism and Feminism are inter-related.

Abstract

This study, and form a philosophical aspect, tries to attempt the issue of truth, its criteria, and its identifying systems; nevertheless in the religious epistemology. It showed that truth is contingent on its history, which entails the historicism of such truth producing mind. Truth, as such, is integrated in the processes of change and transformation that affects ideas, morals, and institutions in a way that no belief or intellectual approach can claim to itself the origin or the total ownership of truth. The study aspired to analyse the starting points put forth by Mohammed Arkoun in his attempt on the issue of truth as it appears in the epistemological system of Islamic thoughts. It, also, highlighted the intellectually critical and methodological approach adopted by Arkoun in his critique of absolute ideation of truth in the Islamic thoughts, and the ability of getting such truth from the Quranic script. Arkoun, always, aimed to explain that every truth is relative and historical, and this applies to all religious discourse including the Islamic religious discourse.
