en
Authors: Yousef M. O’laimat
Keywords: Repetitive Structure, Horizon, Ainiat Al-Hadirah.
Publication year: 2016
Pages: 81 - 94

Abstract

In order to provide a new reading for the Pre-Islamic poetic text Ainiat Al-Hadirah, the present study uses the theoretical and critical concepts of the reception theory. The study is divided into two main parts. The first is the theoretical part in which the researcher proves the efficient role that repetition plays in achieving the concept of textual coherence. In addition, the researcher investigates the effect of repetition in light of its relation to an important concept in the Reception Theory; that is “Horizon of Expectations”. The second part is the practical one that highlights the categorical dimensions created by repetition which can be considered a categorical gap and a stylistic technique in the poem Al-Hadirah. The repetitive structure of the poem highlights many crucial and significant issues such as women traveling by camel (Tha’inah), the horizons of male astonishment, the tribe and time influence, the practical working self and the mythical experience.

Vulnerability and Effectiveness in Badr Shakir Al Sayyab's “The Convoy of Loss” and Ghazi Al Qusaibi's “The Convoy of the Lost”

Authors: Mohammad S. Al-Soudi
Keywords: Vulnerability, effectiveness, dialogue, rhythm, mythology
Publication year: 2016
Pages: 95 - 102

Abstract

This study closely analyzes two poems by two contemporary Arab poets. “The Convoy of Loss” by Badr Shakir Al Sayyab, a founding figure in the movement of modern Arab poetry, and “The Convoy of the Lost” by Ghazi Al Qusaibi, a second generation poet in the movement of modern Arab poetry. Contemporary Arab innovation and creativity are the brainchildren of Al Sayyab and Al Qusaibi’s works by which many Arab poets were influenced. The study also discusses the aspects of the mutual influence between the two poems and other contemporary works. It, therefore, explores the semiotics of the titles, rhythms, dialogues and fables, the role these aspects play in creative writing, and the critical debates they provoke. The study concludes that the two poems have not been studied thoroughly, and that though they have similar titles, address similar issues, and employ similar dialogical and mythological techniques, they have different rhythms. However, Al Qusaibi’s poem is renowned for its high musicality.

Abstract

The topic “woman” is considered one of the most favored topics in Arabic poetry, old and new, especially by romantic poets like Ibrahim Naji. The topic of woman presents a rich content and conveys a deep insight into the poetic texts. This research aims at studying the woman image in the poetry of Ibrahim Naji. This is achieved by focusing on the romantic trend in the modern Arab poetry, taking into consideration that Naji is one of the pioneers and one of the best representatives of that era of the romance period. Naji has expressed his emotions employing symbolism away from sensuality. For, even though the woman was his source of torture and agony, she was nonetheless his source of inspiration and creativity. He draws her has an angelic being soaring the skies. This was manifested using holy emotions which nurtured his romanticism and set his implorations afire. He conveys his experience to the recipient’s mind in a most vivid manner.

Problematic Translation in the Construction of the Arabic linguistic terms / The translation of the Saussure book as a model

Abstract

The ‘term’ is a basic foundation for researchers in various fields. The linguistic term, however is considered one of the most important terms that require special attention; since it is the gate through which the researchers pass to provide a clear vision when dealing with the terminology of other fields. The environment and the culture that the translator emerges from during his dealing with the terminology are crucial in the outcome of the translation. Sometimes, the translator chooses certain terms rather that others and employs them in his writings and translations of foreign research. This enhances coherence in dealing with the terms where they are disseminated and standardized, or leads to dispersion and scattering in some fields. This paper is based on translations of Saussure book into Arabic where every translator belongs to a culture that differs in some aspects from that of the other translators. Each translator deals with the terms from his own perspective which is reflected in selecting particular terms rather than other terms.
