Abstract

The study aims at investigating the synoptic conditions associated with Alexa storm that affected Jordan between December 11 and 14th, 2013. To do this, the researcher analyzed weather maps (1000, 500, and 300 hPa) and tephigram diagrams to identify changes in weather elements (e.g. relative humidity, temperature, air pressure, dew point , wind speed and direction) during the same period of December. The weather records for five weather stations (Irbid, Ras Muneef, Sweileh, Al-Mafraq, Al-Shoubak, and Ma’an) were also studied. The research showed a significant relationship between the severity of Alexa storm and existence of a very low pressure cell above Jordan which accompanied with arctic air mass. In the upper atmospheric layers ( 300 and 500 haP), results showed existence of northeastern to southwestern upper trough which attracted cold air from eastern Europe to the eastern region of the Mediterranean. This cold air flow increased the severity of the low pressure cell and resulted in maximizing rainfall rates. For example, rainfall amounts in Sweileh, Ras Muneef, Irbid, Shoubak, and AL-Mafraq were: 164.4 mm, 106.3 mm, 89.3 mm, 52.6 mm, and 19.4 mm, respectively. The storm Alexa also resulted in accumulated snow that reached 136 cm in depth in Ras Muneef and 180 cm in depth in Sweileh. The storm Alexa caused dramatic damages to infrastructure in Jordan and the considerable amount of snowfall paralyzed life in entire Jordan for days.

Abstract

The sung poem is the oldest kind of singing. Contemporary great Arabic song composers have always been concerned about it. The most famous ones are Mohamed Abd El Wahab, Al kasabgi and El Sonbati, later El Mogy and others composed for the same form. These compositions have proved to be of great interest to most listeners what so ever their social and educational level is, besides its influence on their human and artistic taste. We cannot also ignore the works of kazem El Saher which attracted the listener's attention. In this period the songs which we can call "commercial songs" have dominated the singing market with its poor words and weak melodies. Despite its role in spoiling the general taste yet, producing artistic companies keep producing a huge amount of them. In the same time they neglect producing songs with great fine artistic values. This makes the composer of these fine songs pay a lot to produce his songs in an attempt to change a painful reality of a decreasing general taste in the Arabic society. Many of Ayman Taisser's songs are full of fine artistic values. These songs attracted the researcher's attention and through her paper she tried to describe his style, this style which fights the poor commercial works and gives a very qualified works. This paper is divided into two sections; The theoretical included; the song, its developmental stages, the objective of each song and the biography of Ayman Taisser. The practical section included; the analysis of two of Ayman Taisser's songs. This analysis dealt with the mqamat and the melodies used. Finally she added her own view on these examples. The paper ended with the results, recommendations and the references used.

Abstract

This study investigated the motivational factors of tertiary students for learning English in Aceh, Indonesia. It further examined the year of study and urban/rural provenance influences on their levels of motivation. Approximately 56 university students participated in this research. The research instrument was a closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 10 items adapted from the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (Smythe & Gardner, 1981). Three types of motivation were measured: intrinsic, extrinsic/instrumental and integrative (Noels, 2003). The findings showed that integrative motivation/international posture was the popular motive for learning English (M=5.369), followed by intrinsic (M=4.991) and extrinsic/instrumental motivations (M=4.732). This indicated that English was learned in order to converse and associate with foreigners from other countries who speak English. We further presume that this may have also been triggered by the increasing number of foreigners who are entering Aceh either for work or tourism after the earthquake and tsunami disaster which struck the province in 2004 and “opened” to the world the previously “closed” province due to political conflicts. Therefore, the year of study and the areas in which they came from did not affect their levels of motivation as both showed no significant differences between these variables.

Abstract

Abstract Based on a sociolinguistic approach, the authors investigatekrg the translation of measure terms from Jordanian Spoken Arabic (JSA) into English. It shows that the Jordanian culture and social background control the use of certain terms related to parts of the human body to describe sizes, lengths, and amounts. When translated, these unique socio-cultural terms pose serious challenges to translators due to the difficulty of finding the TL equivalence and /or providing the exact metric measures. The theoretical framework of this study draws on a sociolinguistics approach to translation, as it is pivotal to the understanding of the social meaning of an utterance when rendering it from ST into TT. This study reveals that the predominant translating strategies employed by translators include using different but more accurate units of measure, communicating the measure terms functionally, and using an indefinite amount of something (some) as equivalent to a roughly defined amount in the SL. The present study is an attempt to analyze these commonly- used measure terms within the social context of JSA. Finally, this study sheds light on the problems encountered when rendering these terms into English, with the aim of disambiguating them for the target audience.

Abstract

The reasons influencing teachers to resign or take early retirements are said to be vast and intertwined. This paper investigates the reasons for mass teacher resignations and early retirements in South Africa. Three circuits were purposively selected. This paper found that the majority of teachers who resigned or opted for early retirements were motivated by pressure of work due to increased workload, low teacher salaries, lack of security and safety and indebtedness of teachers and lack of incentives which demoralise teachers. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the employer should improve conditions of service.

Abstract

Abstract Oriental singing forms a major importance in the Middle Eastern communities. Our generation always has direct interest and strong desire in learning such type of music when they take part in any institution and local music schools or colleges. And the random research that depends on the ways of passing and representing the way of teaching depends on the institutions and colleges of music, therefore, we have seen the need of written ideas and proposals to increase the quality of the students' performance in this subject, not only to get the student to the stage of tradition, but to open the opportunity and prevent any limitations to support the improvement of talent in a talented person who only needs an opportunity and more popularity. And that was out of the experience in the oriental, cultural and classical music, and teaching in different musical institutions, and through his countless performances in the opera house and around the Arab world. The research consists of two parts: Part 1 (Theory part); which includes the previous studies and theoretical concepts of the research. Part 2 (Practical part); includes the method provided by the researcher on how to improve the level and quality of the students' performance in the Oriental singing subject through parts of three works (sample) which was introduced to the experts and experienced professionals to express an opinion on its validity through the Opinion Poll form. The paper concludes with findings and recommendations.
