This research tackles the fundamental idea of the intellectual properties in Attahir Wattar’s al-Sham‘ah wa-al-dahālīz ‘the candle and the passageways’. It also aims at exploring the conflicts the characters live the novel at a critical time in Algeria’s history. The novel represents three important stages in the history of Algeria namely: the distant past, the near past and the current state at the time the novel was written. These three stages are passageways in the novel. The candle is moving to find hope with so many passageways to pain walked by the Algerian who also represents all Arabs. This novel is inseparable form the intellectual and cultural structure of the Algerian society. The receptive approach is appropriate here as it deals with expectations and ways of reception
